When I was around 12 years old, I sold a short story to a girls' magazine, and I got to see it published with my name on it for all to see. I have never gotten over the thrill of seeing my byline, and I worked for some years on a quarterly magazine in which I regularly had several bylines.
Since I started freelancing for the web, I have sold some of my writing to publishers who didn't tell me where or when my articles would be published. I feel like an egg donor with children out there on the Internet somewhere I can't call my own. I am happy to have a regular byline and a home at Suite 101.com. It's good to be a part of something, and I am proud to be a part of this fine writerly group. They have high standards for their writers, and they aren't afraid to let you know what those are on day one. I like shooting for excellence.
In addition to working on a magazine and as a freelancer for a number of years, I am the CEO (ha) of my own business, FeedYourHead Books, an online bookstore. I love everything there is to love about books. I even love how they feel and smell. I try to sell a few, but end up mostly collecting them. I do collect some first editions.
I am very proud of my two children. My daughter, Sonja, just graduated from DePauw in Greencastle, Indiana. My son, Eric, is just starting junior college. He is going to study English just like his mother did. He, too, loves to read. We share an affinity for Don DeLillo's work.
The only thing I love more than books is writing. When I write there is no time. It is noon and then it is three in the morning.
